Dental Veneers also known as Dental Laminates are paper thin, custom-made tooth covers that mask the front of a tooth just like a false fingernail fits over a nail.
They are bonded to the front of the teeth to correct their color, shape, size, or length. It is a type of thin tooth crown only a much more conservative and less invasive type as it doesn’t require much trimming of the tooth
They are prepared using a resin composite cement. the cement is directly bonded to the tooth surface or may require some removal of tooth surface defects, depending upon the case.
These generally require a single visit.
They are prepared using a resin composite cement. The cement is they are comparatively cheaper than porcelain veneers. They are aesthetically less appealing as compared to the porcelain veneers. They tend to stainThey chip or fracture much more easily than their porcelain counterparts
They are a more durable form of tooth veneers and may last upto 10-20 years if taken care of.
They are placed after slight tooth reduction on the facial surface.
They usually resist stains and have a translucency that mimics the natural tooth appearance because of their 0.5mm thickness.
These require removing a small amount of tooth surface to facilitate their placement which allows a good fit without making you feel bulky about them. They are relatively expensive than a composite veneer but are longer lasting They are much more resistant to chipping or breaking than composite veneers
What are lumineers/ luminers?
These are ultrathin veneers of 0.2-0.3mm thickness and require no or very little tooth reduction.Because of their ultrathin properties.
These are incapable of hiding heavily-stained teeth. Since, they are placed after little or no tooth preparation, your tooth might feel bit bulkier. These may also make ledges on your gums, causing it difficult for you to clean them leading to gum inflammation. Still the most non invasive type of veneer
Are they painfull?
The whole procedure of placing veneers starting right from the tooth reduction, till the time veneers are placed, is completely painless!! It might cause some sensitivity while the tooth is being prepared but that can be taken care off by an anesthetic.
After the veneers are placed, you might feel uncomfortable for few hours or a couple of days. This happens because the lips and tongue need some time to adjust to the new size of the teeth. Overall it is a very pleasant cosmetic procedure.
