Dental Veneers and Lumineers

Dental veneers and Lumineers are a thin cover of teeth. These are made from a tooth-colored material that covers the front side of the teeth. Dental veneers are also called porcelain dental laminates.

Dental veneers are permanently placed (glued) on the front surface of the teeth to correct the color, shape, size, and length of the teeth. Dental veneers are of three types: Dental Lumineers, Porcelain dental veneers, and Composite dental veneers.

Dental veneers are used to remove gaps in teeth, fix broken teeth, correct crooked teeth, and teeth whitening. These last for over 20 years.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Dental Veneers

Advantages

  • Dental veneers give a very natural smile because these are thin and translucent and fit perfectly on teeth.
  • Dental veneers can be used as a quick alternative to dental braces for mild cases of crooked teeth or gaps in teeth.
  • Dental veneers do not stain or discolor.
  • Dental veneers fix broken teeth.

Disadvantages

  • Porcelain dental veneers require tooth reduction, but, dental Lumineers do not require tooth reduction.
  • Porcelain dental veneers might cause tooth sensitivity, but dental Lumineers do not cause tooth sensitivity.
  • It takes 3-4 days to prepare and apply dental veneers in the mouth.

Types of Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are of three types:

These are strong and require no trimming of teeth.

These are the strongest, but require a little trimming of teeth.

These are very weak and break very easily. These are not recommended.

Lumineers

  • Lumineers are very thin dental veneers of 0.2 mm in thickness.
  • Lumineers require no tooth reduction and are non-invasive.
  • The tooth might feel a bit heavy for some time because Lumineers are placed without any tooth reduction, but after a few days, the heaviness does not feel.
  • It is the most non-invasive type of dental veneers.
  • Lumineers cost slightly more than porcelain dental veneers.
  • Lumineers last for around 10 years. The life of Lumineers is more than composite dental veneers but slightly less than porcelain dental veneers.

Porcelain Dental Veneers

  • Porcelain dental veneers are 0.5 mm in thickness
  • These are placed after a slight tooth reduction.
  • These are the strongest and last for 20 years.
  • These cost more than composite dental veneers, and slightly less than Lumineers.
  • These are very difficult to break or crack.
  • Dental veneers and Lumineers both are equally good, and cost almost the same.
  • Porcelain dental veneers give a perfect shape and size without making teeth heavy because a small amount of tooth surface is removed to make space for the dental veneers.

Composite Dental Veneers

  • Composite dental veneers are made using a dental cement that is used in tooth filling. The cement is directly applied to the tooth surface.
  • These generally require a single visit.
  • These are cheaper than porcelain dental veneers and Lumineers.
  • These tend to stain and don’t look very natural.
  • These do not require trimming of teeth and are non-invasive.
  • These break or fracture much more easily than porcelain dental veneers and Lumineers. Composite dental veneers last for around 3 years.

Dental Veneers Vs Lumineers

Porcelain Dental Veneers

  • Porcelain dental veneers are 0.5 mm in thickness
  • These last for 20+ years.
  • These require mild tooth reduction

Lumineers

  • Lumineers are 0.2 mm to 0.3 mm in thickness
  • Lumineers last for 10 years
  • Lumineers require no tooth reduction

Composite Vs Porcelain Dental Veneers

Porcelain Dental Veneers

  • Porcelain dental veneers last for 20 years
  • These do not discolor or stain
  • These are strong and don’t break easily
  • These cost more than composite dental veneers
  • These require mild tooth reduction

Composite Dental Veneers

  • Composite dental veneers last for 3 years
  • These discolor very soon
  • These tend to break often
  • These are cheaper than porcelain dental veneer
  • These do not require tooth reduction

Procedure for Placing Dental Veneers

Dental veneers and Lumineers are placed in 3-4 days in two parts.

First Visit: In the first visit, the dentist does a complete check-up and takes an impression of the mouth. In the case of dental veneers, the impression is taken after reducing the teeth, whereas for Lumineers, an impression is taken without tooth reduction. The first visit takes 30-60 minutes. Dental veneers are made in 2-3 days.

Second Visit: After a gap of 2-3 days, in the second visit, the dental veneers are permanently glued to the surface of the teeth using a very strong chemical.

The second visit takes a longer time because each dental veneer or Lumineer takes 20-30 minutes to apply on one tooth. So, if you need multiple dental veneers then it can take up to 7-8 hours to apply on all teeth.

Precautions after Treatment

  • Eat soft food for 24 hours after the surgery
  • Avoid hot food and drinks for 24 hours after surgery
  • Do not drink from a straw for 24 hours
  • Do not spit or gargle or rinse harshly for 24 hours
  • Take prescribed medicine on time
  • Keep your teeth clean and maintain good oral hygiene.
