Replace All Missing Teeth with Dental Implants

Fixed teeth in whole mouth on dental implants, is the process of replacing all missing teeth with fixed teeth on dental implants. In this treatment, dental implants are placed in both upper and lower jaws.

After inserting the dental implants, fixed teeth (dental bridge) are permanently placed on the dental implants. The dental implants hold the fixed teeth in its position in the mouth.

At least 4 dental implants are required in each jaw for 12 fixed teeth in a jaw, and at least 8 dental implants are

required in each jaw for 14 fixed teeth in a jaw. Therefore, total 8 dental implants are required in whole mouth for 24 fixed teeth in the whole mouth, and total 16 dental implants are required in the whole mouth for 28 fixed teeth.

Total Number of Fixed Teeth and Dental Implants

There are 4 options for fixed teeth in the whole mouth placed on dental implants:

  • 4 dental implants in each jaw (total 8 dental implants) and total 24 fixed teeth
  • 6 dental implants in each jaw (total 12 dental implants) and total 24 fixed teeth
  • 8 dental implants in each jaw (total 16 dental implants) and total 28 fixed teeth
  • 10 dental implants in each jaw (total 20 dental implants) and total 28 fixed teeth

The total number of fixed teeth in the mouth depends on the dental implants placed in the jaw. For example, 4 dental implants in a jaw can hold maximum 12 fixed teeth in a jaw, while 8 dental implants in a jaw can hold 14 fixed teeth in a jaw.

Alternative of Dental Implant: Denture

Denture

A cheaper alternative of dental implants is a denture for whole mouth without the dental implants. But a denture without dental implants has no support in mouth from any natural tooth or dental implant. Therefore, it does not stay in a fixed position in mouth while talking, eating, and chewing. This hurts gums and causes wounds and bruises in the mouth.

Another option is to place a denture on dental implants. In this, a denture is placed on dental implants, instead

Denture

of a dental bridge, and the dental implants hold the denture in its position in the mouth. It works the same as dental bridge on dental implants, but the denture has a shorter life span and less biting force than fixed teeth. However, it costs less because it requires only 4 dental implants in each jaw for total 28 teeth, as compared to 8 dental implants in each jaw for a dental bridge of 28 fixed teeth.

Procedure for Dental Implants

A dental implant surgery is done in two parts. Dental implants are placed in the jaw in the first part, and a dental bridge is placed on the dental implants in the second part.

First Visit: The first visit is of 4-5 days. In this visit, on the first day, the doctor first takes a 3D image or an x-ray of the mouth, and then plans the treatment. Dental implants are placed on the second day.

Dental Implant Placement: In this surgery, dental implants are placed in the jaw. It takes 45-60 minutes to insert one dental implant. After the surgery, you can resume your daily work after 2-3 days. Dental bridge is not yet placed in this surgery because the bone needs time to heal completely.

Healing / Waiting Time: The healing / waiting time is of 2 months. A temporary dental bridge made of acrylic tooth crowns is placed over the dental implants as a temporary replacement of a permanently fixed dental bridge.

During this time, you can eat, chew all types of food but temporary acrylic tooth crowns are

weaker than permanently fixed zirconia tooth crowns, so you should eat only eat soft food and avoid biting hard food items.

Second Visit: The second visit is of 3-4 days. In this, a fixed dental bridge is permanently placed over the dental implants. No healing time is required after this.

Precautions after Treatment

  • Eat soft food for 24 hours after the surgery
  • Avoid hot food and drinks for 24 hours after surgery
  • Do not drink from a straw for 24 hours
